Chuck Pomelear compares his blade with the template he designed in the knife-making class at Faith Baptist in Enterprise, AL. Machinist Nelson Newman (red shirt) has developed a ministry that puts into practice Proverbs 27:17. “Iron sharpeneth iron, so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
Nelson currently teaches 24 guys how to make their own fixed blade knife over a period of 12 weeks. He gives a Bible devotional that ties to the bladesmithing technique taught each week and has developed a curriculum (which includes a how-to manual, tools needed and discipleship materials) that can be used by other like-minded men across the country.
Several of the men enthusiastically showed me their knives in progress. Tonight the men used a forge. Next week they begin forming handles and eventually sheaths. It’s incredible to see these guys learning not only about metal but about God. 2/3 of the weekly class are people who previously had no connection with the church. Two more men signed up last night for the next available class.
